My other car, a 04 Toyota Corolla hit a curb tonight. My girlfriend was driving the car making a left turn and the right front wheel hit the curb probably because of black ice on the road. She managed to drive home because the accident happened just a block from where we live. I looked at the car and the right front wheel looks fine. When I drove it the steering wheel is off-center but it turns okay and the car isn't pulling to either side.

My question is what I need to do repairing the car? Alignment seems to be a must because the steering is off-center. I wonder what other suspension parts I need to look for. It's Saturday and I have to call to see if the dealer opens and hopefully the repair bill won't be high.

For those who knows, the weather is bad again in Vancouver this week. Snowed about 6" in the area I live and the temperature stayed below zero celsius in the last few days. I wish I could drove her but we just had bad schedules.

Thanks in advance

Depending how hard she hit the curb there is a good chance some suspension components are damaged. A good visual inspection of the wheel and suspension will be required. In my experience if she hit hard enough to cause the steering to be off-center, you are going to need more than just an alignment.

Like Doug said, you'll have to have it looked by someone you trust. I did something similar in my old 86 Daytona Turbo Z. I got hit from behind by a city bus and it slammed me into a curb pretty hard and it bent some components down there. I think my repair bill was a tie rod, control arm and a ball joint...if memory serves me correctly.

Thanks guys, approximately how much are tie rod, control arm and ball joint cost? I'm heading to the dealer now as they have a spot available in 1/2 hour. Finger cross now...

A pure WAG! If the wheel is OK then you are in the $600-$800 USD range.

The Toyota dealer disappointed me. When I called this morning, I explained the curb accident and ask if they could perform an alignment and the lady who answered said "yes". Therefore, I drove there. I arrived at 10:20 AM and the service advisor suggested doing the service because the car is just 700km away from the required service. Fine, you let me in for a fully booked Saturday so I am willing to let you make the money earlier. At 12 PM, my car was ready. Service advisor said they can't do the alignment because they don't have the machine but arranged an appointment on Wednesday. I b*tched about they said they can have it done and $!#@$%%@. Anyhow, I let the advisor book me in for Wednesday. My family had been deal with this Toyota dealership since 1992 and we didn't have any problem with them. Today is the first time they show me the $hitty service. At the end, I paid $218 for just an oil change and pollen filter change and tire rotation...

After that, I drove to an independent tire shop that I installed tires for my Volvo. Luckily, they had time to check out the damage. After they drove my car up to the alignment ramp, they told me to go take a look under the car. The inner and outer tie rods are bent. They suggest to replace both rods and have an alignment done. The shop called for parts right away and a dealership in the area have the right parts but won't able to deliver until 3PM. Therefore, I told them to order the parts and I will return on Monday. Hopefully, those are the only repair needed.

I wonder how the Toyota tech couldn't tell the bent tie rods.
