Havnt been on in a while, like years. Couple of you guys know me from VS (PopsRacer). I am a dedicated 855 T5 owner, but Im pushing 250k on my chariot. I'm looking into an adult car now.

Whats the 'best' model year to be looking for a V70R? A/T is fine, and a T5 certainly could be considered. My wife drives a 2001 S60 so I'm kind of familiar with the platform.

School me, yo.

Stay with your 850, you haven't grown up yet

I would ask, do you want to gradually move up, like from a 855 to a first Gen VR (same size only slightly different depending on year) or do you want to go to something like the S60 size and bells and whistles? I would also ask do you want to mod it or keep it stock. And depending on what you want to do, ie motor or suspension. If your 855 is modded you could easily move parts from it to a 1st Gen VR depending on the motor and some of the suspension/brake parts, mostly to do with the front. 2nd Gen seem to need a little less modding are are nice right out of the box...

'98 are the closest to your 855 motor wise. '99 w/18t and '00 w/19t are ME7 with the newer RN motors, also '00 gets the 5sp auto AW55 which have issues sometimes.

I do have to add that I love the AWD on mine, its simple and works. On VS a lot of the guys say its garbage. But I have to say that within the first 6 months of owning mine '00R I was very impressed and glad of my purchase with the AWD w/snow tires in 2" of snow. And in the 6yrs I've owned it, I've only got stuck once, while backing out of my driveway in a 1ft of snow with directional snow tires, and I'm lowered about 1-1.5"...

As for the 2nd Gen I'm not as familiar with them, but I know the '04 and '05 have the AW55 5sp auto (same as the '00R but they work the bugs out by then) and the '06-'07 have a 6sp auto which is quicker then the manual. I've heard that the 4c struts are pricey when the go and the heated seats aren't as good as older models. I think a good alternative to a '04-'07 R is a T-5 AWD, same drivetrain, but not as much of the bells and whistles that go bad as the R. Again I don't know much about these cars, so hopefully someone with more experience with chime in about them.

And Pops, please no childish Giants rant like you did on VS or I'll agree with Jim that you "haven't grown up". :P

You should know better
"T5 AWD"
That does not exist except in an S40 or V50

Honestly Jim I don't know much after '00! I thought they made a HPT AWD... I guess it must be 2.5 LPT AWD.

Nope
2.4T not a 2.5T
2.5s LPT's did not come to the USA until 2003

To answer your question directly. 07 is your best bet, 06's are fine too. But I believe the 06's have more issue's with their Valve bodies than the 07's. Either way the 06-07's have the heavier duty 6spd auto. the 04-05's still have the weaker 5spd. Best of luck.

Holy mackerel! I don't think that either of these posts have a place on this forum. It is very disappointing to see. JRL did start this off on the wrong foot, but I don't see the need for the obscenity in follow up posts from either of you.

In any case, I love my 05 V70R, even though it has needed some work done as it passed through 85k miles. It is the GT transmission, and while I would have preferred the manual, I found mine with the second row boosters, and the third row seat along with the VIP warranty, so I've paid very little out of pocket to have it serviced. The kids love the third row seat, and the car is just such a joy to drive. I'm keeping mine for a long time, at least until I find my manual Sonic Blue with Atacama, and the third row seat and boosters...actually I doubt that car even exists so I think I'll keep what I've got and just enjoy it for the sport wagon that it is!
