Is my wagon an "R" just because it has a "R" badge?

Great post, but this point is debated every time it comes up. I still don't know the real answer.

I can't say either way, since I've heard convincing arguments for both sides. Here are pics of rods pulled from an 00 R:

Are there part #'s cast onto the rods and does anyone have non-R turbo rods lying around to compare to? I'd be interested to know if Volvo lists internal engine parts on Vida for a possible comparison. Of course, there could be different part #'s due to minor differences, not necessarally differences in strength.

No idea, I don't have VIDA/VADIS or rods from different engines to check. I've seen posts that state the rods have the same part #, but again, I can't say definitively.

Update on the rods! According to a version of Vadis that I looked at, all 1999 model year 5 cyl engines(including the "R") have the same rod part # 1270483, including non-turbo engines. For MY 2000, all turbo engines(including "R"), have the same part # 1270483, while the non-turbo engines received part # 1270671, which was also used at least into the early 2000's for the non-turbos. Interestingly, the P2 cars with the 2.4T LPT (B5244T3) starting I believe in 2001 used the same #1270671 rod as the non-turbo. Also, this same rod was used starting in MY 2002 for the 1st gen C70 with both the LPT and HPT(B5234T3) engine, while the P2 T5(B5234T3) engine used the previously mentioned 1270483 rod. What surprises me is that although the C70 2.3 HPT and P2 2.3 T5 engine used the same designation(B5234T3), they use a different rod according to Vadis. Prior to 2002, the C70 HPT and LPT did use the 1270483 rod.

Could these changeovers from part # 1270483 to 1270671 be related to the discussions on Volvo forums about longer rods/shorter pistons that were reportedly done to RN engines around this time, starting with the 2000 Non-turbo?

I have not yet researched prior to MY 99 or later than 2003, and I havn't fully researched the 2.5T engines, which appear to have different part #'s than the ones discussed here. Also, on occasion, there have been errors related to Vadis/Vida part #'s, so hopefully this info is accurate.

Minor update: 2002 C70 HPT is designated B5234T3, and 2003-2004 C70 HPT is designated B5234T9, still correct is both use rod # 1270671. Vadis states that all 1998 5 cyl engines use rod # 1270483, same as all MY 1999, Although for 1998, there is a different part # listed next to the 1270483 part #, possibly making the 1270483 # an updated replacement part.

I'm planning on starting a new thread on VS about this, just need to find time.

the valve covers looked like they are painted, the same color as the car. when did the blue covers came out, I know my 1996 R didn't have them.
btw: nice looking car
